Kingman turquoise is mined in Kingman, Arizona, and comes in a range of color and matrix patterns. The matrix is normally brownish. Turquoise got its name from the Levantine traders called Turks who brought the stone to Europe from Persia via Turkey centuries ago. Native American’s have prized turquoise since the time of the Aztecs, who mined it in Mexico. Untreated turquoise is a fragile, porous stone with a tendency to undergo undesirable changes in color when exposed to light, perspiration, oils, and detergents. Kingman turquoise in particular is very chalky and unworkable in its natural form. This turquoise has been stabilized by impregnating it with a resin or epoxy with saturates the pores and gives the stone a richer color. It also hardens the turquoise so that is workable for jewelry.
